An elderly man standing in the rain holding the umbrella's handle, with scenes from the umbrella's journey around him

A story told in the umbrella's own words

Sukumar Chatterjee's
Lost Umbrella

One umbrella, many owners — but in the end, who did it come back to?

A plain black umbrella. Eight iron ribs, a curved wooden handle — and two small letters carved into that handle.

Left behind by mistake at a tea stall in the market by its first owner, the retired Sukumar Chatterjee, it began a solitary journey of its own — from hand to hand, from one town to the next lane.

Someone picks it up. Someone buys it. Someone is forced to let it go, out of sheer need.

Every time, a new hand, a new roof, a new story. And every time, the same question stirs inside it — does Sukumar Babu still remember it? Or has he forgotten everything by now?

Years go by. The umbrella's colour fades, its ribs grow old — but the two carved letters on the handle never wear away.
